Working in partnership with The University of Birmingham, our talented team developed the Clinical Assessment Feedback System (CAFS) – an innovative, efficient and time-saving piece of dental school software and tracking system to help the university's School of Dentistry to manage their students’ learning.
Our software specialists were tasked with building an HTML5 app with a wide range of features, creating a centralised monitoring and assessment system that would benefit both tutors and dental students. The app needed to allow students to record details of treatment sessions on their tablet and smartphone devices, with the facility to upload to the server after the session where no immediate internet connection is available.

The system is more than just a mobile app – it also includes a web based portal where students can monitor their progress, teachers can generate activity reports for individual/group users and record absences, and administrators can manage users and the app interface.
Students can record precise details of treatments carried out for assessment, including teeth treated and procedures, materials and dentistry techniques used. Teachers can grade and comment on each session, then protect the data from further edits via a ‘lock’ function.
A two-way comment thread allows teachers and students to exchange and record their reflections on each treatment session. Comments can be made and viewed in ‘real time’ while the session is in progress – and after completion too.
In addition to monitoring and recording general treatment sessions, the software also includes an assessment framework. This allows tutors to record and mark assessed tests, ensuring all data is stored in the same format and in one accessible place.
The CAFS dental school software gives students access to their treatment session history, grade averages and performance and access to year group stats so they can monitor their progress in comparison to their peers via the intuitive web portal.
Teachers have instant access to up-to-date and detailed reports for all of their students, and can also view aggregated reports in order to compare student activity across their classes. Administrators can also edit the procedures and their individual controls.
